Memorial Day on Deck

This morning marked the Memorial Day Services aboard the Intrepid.  An enormous American Flag was unfurled by legions of military from all branches, two warplanes did a fly over after a gun salute, and astronaut Buzz Aldrin (in blue jacket above) helped to furl the flag.

Fleet Week continues ...

Fleet Week celebrations continued today with musical and theatrical performances as well as a very competitive tug of war between Intrepid crew members, FDNY, the Marines, and the Navy.  FDNY took the trophy.  Click here for story and more photos.

FRIDAY, MAY 28, 2010

Among the many wonderful booths set up on the Pier at Intrepid was one for Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum who decided that, because of his fame in "Pirates of the Caribbean", it would be appropriate to bring the Johnny Depp figure back to a ship.  I thought that was a very creative idea!  He was amazingly lifelike and the wax skin reflected the light just like the real thing.  I photographed him in the shade of a clear vinyl booth.

THURSDAY, MAY 27, 2010

Tonight we volunteered at the Gala at the Intrepid, where General David H. Petraeus was presented with the “Salute to Freedom” award by Dr. Henry Kissinger who was celebrating his 87th birthday with his beautiful wife, Nancy.  The 11 ship and airplane models which I photographed (see post of May 21) sold at auction for a very generous total of $70,400 which will be used toward the Intrepid’s Exhibits.

Fleet Week at the Intrepid

As the USS Iwo Jima headed up the Hudson, members of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum enjoyed a reception in the shade of the Concorde at the end of the Pier, as well as a guided tour of the aircraft and the hangar.  It was a hot, but enjoyable morning!

Shooting models ... the other kind

Today was a "model" day!  Shot 11 different ones, 9 ships and 2 airplanes, which will be auctioned off at a wonderful gala event next week.  Attending the gala will be General David Petraeus and Henry Kissinger.  Eric and I will be there, helping to auction one of the airplane models.  The Titanic model in the middle is 10' long!

A very early morning bird watch led by Brenda McIntyre.   Saw many colorful birds including types of migrating warblers (included Yellow, and Chestnut-Sided), a flock of Cedar Waxwings, a Baltimore Oriole, a pair of Rose Breasted Grosbeaks (male pictured above), a Wood Thrush, Red-Breasted Woodpecker, American Redstarts, Indigo Buntings, and a Scarlet Tanager.  Some of the birds look a bit fuzzy with my not-quite-strong-enough 200MM lens, but here are some nice memories of a beautiful morning.
